2022 UNC System Employee Engagement Survey
ECU would like to thank everyone who contributed to the UNC System Employee Engagement Survey over the past few weeks. The information that you and your colleagues provided through the survey will help us continue to identify our areas of strength as an institution as well as identify areas that will demand more of our attention to meet the needs of our faculty, staff, and students. It was a terrific opportunity to let your voice be heard, and we deeply appreciate your willingness to provide your honest feedback and thoughtful suggestions.
We had an impressive participation rate for the survey. Our overall response rate was 42%, which is a strong response rate for a survey of this nature. Higher participation rates yield a quality data set and indicate both a strong interest in the process and a commitment to our community. We are hopeful that the interest and enthusiasm will continue as we move into post-survey action planning and continuation of the survey program every two years.
Our baseline survey results in 2018 were relatively low compared to the original benchmarking provided by our survey administrator, ModernThink, with 58% of responses scored as positive. There was no significant improvement overall in the 2020 survey, as our positive results remained relatively flat. In the 2022 survey, however, ECU saw a significant improvement in the overall positive response rate, with 66% of responses scored as positive. About the Survey
At East Carolina University we want to continue fostering a workforce that is prepared to meet the changing needs of the University — a priority in the strategic plans for both the UNC System and our campus. The UNC System Strategic Plan includes a goal to foster diverse and excellent institutions. To support this goal, each institution in the UNC System will participate in a biennial system-wide survey to gather input about workplace engagement.
The UNC System Employee Engagement Survey aims to gain clearer measurements for success that will assist with our recruitment, retention, and development of the most talented and diverse workforce possible — both as a system and on our campus. The data will also be useful to University leadership and others in our community as we work to build on faculty and staff engagement, build on successes and address ongoing challenges.
To date, the UNC System and its constituent institutions have participated in the Employee Engagement Survey three times – first in February 2018, again in February 2020, and most recently in March 2022. Previous versions of the survey asked employees for their thoughts about topics relating to communications, collaboration, supervision, and benefits, among other items.
