2024 UNC System Employee Engagement Survey

March 25th, 2024 – April 8th, 2024

The University of North Carolina System will soon launch its fourth system-wide employee survey to measure workplace engagement. This survey aligns with the UNC System Strategic Plan and helps identify areas of strength and areas for improvement at each institution. The survey is designed for permanent full-time employees and can help us gauge and enhance your experience as an ECU faculty or staff member.

Starting Monday, March 25th, 2024, all permanent full-time faculty and staff here at ECU (75% time or more) will begin receiving their survey invitations from the survey administrator, ModernThink. This year’s survey will be similar to previous surveys, and participants should expect to be able to complete the survey on their computer or mobile device in less than 20 minutes. The email contains a unique login and password that you will use to take the survey.

Survey participation is voluntary and completely confidential. Please share your honest feedback and know that your responses will remain anonymous. In fact, ModernThink is the only entity that can access or view raw survey data and individual responses. System Office and the constituent institutions do not have access to any raw data. Because a high response rate helps to ensure an accurate representation of our community, we strongly encourage you to complete the survey—and to encourage your colleagues to complete it, as well.

Over the summer, we will receive and share reports that summarize the data provided so that we can recognize our successes and begin to address concerns that most directly impact and influence our workplace culture. A steering committee made up of representatives from across the university will review and analyze the results and prepare them to present to the entire campus once their work is complete.

About the Survey

At East Carolina University, we seek to cultivate a culture of care, belonging and opportunity for our faculty, staff and learners and all stakeholders, as outlined in Vision Priority 2: Workforce Success of the “Future Focused. Innovation Driven” strategic plan of the university. The 2022-2027 UNC System Strategic Plan, “Higher Expectations”, also includes a goal to improve the employee experience.  In addition, survey items have been added to the 2024 Employee Engagement survey that relate directly to employee mental health and well-being.

The UNC System Employee Engagement Survey aims to gain clearer measurements for success that will assist with our recruitment, retention, and development of the most talented and diverse workforce possible — both as a system and on our campus. The data will also be useful to University leadership and others in our community as we work to build on faculty and staff engagement, build on successes, and address ongoing challenges.

To date, the UNC System and its constituent institutions have participated in the Employee Engagement Survey three times – first in February 2018, again in February 2020, and most recently in March of 2022. Previous versions of the survey asked employees for their thoughts about topics relating to communications, collaboration, supervision, and benefits, among other items.
