2024 Engagement Survey Results

2024 Employee Engagement Survey Results

In early 2024, East Carolina University (ECU) faculty and staff were given an opportunity to participate in the University of North Carolina (UNC) System Employee Engagement Survey, designed to provide metrics for measuring our progress in implementing the UNC System Strategic Plan. The survey was administered through an outside vendor, ModernThink, which is responsible for the Chronicle of Higher Education’s “Great Colleges to Work For” survey. The 2024 survey was the fourth time the survey has been administered, with the first three iterations occurring in 2018, 2020, and 2022.

There were several changes to the 2024 survey:

  • The 2024 iteration of the survey was lengthened from the 31 statements presented in the 2022 “pulse” survey to a 41-statement survey.
  • Some dimensions of the previous survey were expanded upon to focus on the concerns identified in the three previous surveys.

The 2024 Employee Engagement Survey gave us the opportunity to see how ECU’s survey results have evolved from the previous iterations of the survey in 2018, 2020, and 2022. ECU’s response rate in 2024 was 42% overall, the same as our response rate in 2022.

Next Steps Include

Action
Planning

The Department for People Operations, Success, and Opportunity (POSO) has met with university leaders to share the results of the survey, including the results specific to their divisions and/or departments. POSO is continuing to review and analyze the qualitative and quantitative data from the UNC System Employee Engagement Survey (EES) and will support leadership’s action planning in response to the survey trends found in this year’s survey at the institutional and/or divisional levels and the People Success Roundtables.

People Success
Roundtables

In early 2025, seven People Success Roundtables were facilitated in-person and virtually. These roundtables were open to all faculty and staff as an opportunity to discuss the survey results and provide input and recommendations for next steps.

POSO is continuing to work with university leadership and the campus community to create an action plan to be implemented in response to the results of the survey and feedback received in the People Success Roundtables.
